What Is Vibration Accelerating?

Vibration that builds under acceleration is usually a drivetrain component failing under load — a worn inner CV joint is the most common cause on FWD vehicles, while worn U-joints or a bent driveshaft produce similar vibration on RWD and 4WD vehicles.

Is My Car Vibrating When I Accelerate?

You feel a shudder or vibration through the floorboard or seat that appears when you press the accelerator — it may start at a specific speed or throttle position and fade when you ease off. Coasting without throttle is usually smooth.

If the vibration only happens under power and disappears on deceleration, the CV axle or driveshaft is the most likely cause. Vibration that persists whether you're accelerating or not points toward a wheel balance or tire issue instead.

Why Is My Vibration Accelerating?

These are the most common causes. The "How to tell" note on each card describes what that cause typically feels or sounds like so you can narrow down which one applies to your vehicle.

Worn Inner CV Joint

The inner CV joint plunges in and out as the suspension moves and articulates as the wheel turns. Inside, three roller bearings ride in machined tracks. Once those tracks wear, the rollers chatter back and forth under torque load instead of rolling smoothly. That chatter is the vibration you feel under throttle, and it disappears when the load comes off.

How to tell

Vibration appears under throttle and goes away when you lift off. Worse during hard acceleration from a stop or onramp acceleration. Travels up through the steering column. Often paired with clicking from the outer joint on the same axle.

Bent CV Axle

An axle shaft is straight to within a few thousandths of an inch when new. A curb strike or pothole hit can put a slight bend in the shaft, which becomes a runout that the wheel and joint have to absorb every revolution. The faster you go, the more energy the bent shaft pumps into the chassis as vibration.

How to tell

Vibration that builds steadily with speed regardless of throttle input. Often follows a curb impact or deep pothole strike. May also produce a faint cyclic noise at low speeds. Less common than wear-induced vibration.

Worn U-Joint

U-joints on rear-wheel-drive driveshafts have needle bearings inside sealed caps. The grease eventually breaks down and the needles wear flats into the cap surface. Once that happens, the joint can't articulate smoothly under torque, and the imbalance shows up as vibration that spikes when you load the drivetrain.

How to tell

Rear-wheel-drive and 4WD only. Vibration under load with a clunk on initial throttle application or release. Often paired with a faint squeak or grease seepage at the U-joint cap. Common on trucks past 100,000 miles.

When Should You Bring Your Vehicle In for Acceleration Vibration Repair?

As CV joint wear deepens, the vibration band widens — shudder only on hard acceleration becomes vibration at moderate throttle, then constant vibration regardless of throttle. The joint can also lock up without much additional warning.

A CV axle replacement at the vibration stage is a routine same-day repair. The same axle that fails completely while driving can take the hub, ABS sensor, or brake components with it, adding a tow to the bill.

Who to Trust for Drivetrain Vibration Repair in Salt Lake City

We road-test first — characterizing when the vibration appears (under power, constant speed, or coasting) shapes which components we focus on. On the lift, we check CV axle play, U-joint play, wheel bearing roughness, motor mount condition, and tire balance. Motor mounts are commonly missed and feel exactly like a drivetrain issue. Our CV joint service covers what's included.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been doing drivetrain work in South Salt Lake since 1990. We won't recommend a CV axle when the pattern points to a motor mount — pattern recognition is what keeps customers from paying for the wrong repair.

Frequently Asked Questions — Vibration When Accelerating

How much does acceleration vibration repair cost?

A CV axle replacement is $400–$800 per side. Motor mount replacement runs $300–$600 per mount. A wheel balance is $80–$120 for all four. We diagnose first so you only pay for what's actually needed — diagnosis is free.

Should I replace both CV axles or just the failing one?

If the vibration is clearly from one side, the other side may have years of life left. We inspect both joints and boots before recommending. On a vehicle approaching 150,000 miles where both axles are original, doing them together is often the better call. On a newer car with one impact-damaged axle, replacing only the damaged side is the right repair.

How are motor mounts checked when diagnosing vibration?

We open the hood while a helper applies the brake and shifts between Drive and Reverse with the engine running. Excessive engine movement during the load reversal points to collapsed mounts. Visible cracks in the rubber or the engine sitting at an unusual angle are also strong indicators. Motor mounts often get blamed on CV joints incorrectly, and vice versa.

Can tire balance issues cause acceleration vibration?

They can. Tires out of balance produce vibration that builds with speed regardless of throttle, which can mimic an inner CV joint or U-joint. Balancing the tires is part of any vibration diagnosis we run. If a fresh balance resolves the symptom, the drivetrain is healthy and the original problem was tire-related.
