CV Joint & Axle Repair in Salt Lake City, UT
Clicking when you turn or vibration when you accelerate? That's almost always the CV axle. Free diagnosis. Written estimate. No surprises.
What Is CV Joint Repair?
A CV axle is the shaft that sends power from your engine to your wheels, and it has flexible joints at each end so it can move with your steering and suspension. When one of those joints wears out, you usually hear a clicking sound when you turn. Catching it early — often just a torn rubber boot — can save you from a full axle replacement. What Does CV Joint Repair Actually Involve?
A CV axle is the shaft that transfers engine power from your transmission to your wheels. Each axle has two constant-velocity joints that allow the shaft to flex with suspension movement and steering without binding. The photo here shows the difference clearly: the dark corroded axle at the top shows what happens when the rubber boot tears — grease escapes, road grit gets in, and the ball bearings inside wear against each other, which is what causes the clicking you hear on turns. The clean axle at the bottom has an intact accordion boot with a fresh clamp; as long as that boot stays sealed, the joint can last the life of the vehicle.
Outer CV joint — connects the axle to the wheel hub and handles the sharp angles of steering. This joint takes the most stress during tight turns and is the one that produces the classic clicking sound when it wears.
Inner CV joint — connects the axle to the transmission and handles the up-and-down plunge movement of the suspension. Wear here typically shows up as a shudder or vibration under acceleration.
CV boots — rubber covers that seal grease inside the joints and keep road debris out. A torn boot is the most common cause of joint failure. If caught early, a boot replacement can save the joint. If ignored, grit gets in and destroys the joint.
Axle seals — where the axle meets the transmission, a seal keeps transmission fluid from migrating into the boot. A seeping seal contaminates the CV grease and shortens the axle's life.
Depending on what we find, the work we commonly perform includes:
Can You Drive with a Bad CV Joint?
You can — for a while — but a clicking CV joint that's ignored will eventually fail completely, and it usually happens without warning. What started as a boot-only repair becomes a full axle job once grit has worked into the joint. A worn inner joint under load can cause loss of drive on hard acceleration. Getting it looked at early keeps a straightforward repair from becoming a more expensive one.
The most common reasons drivers come in are clicking or popping when turning, vibration that builds during acceleration, a dark grease residue on the inside of a wheel or tire, a clunking sound when shifting between drive and reverse, or a boot they've noticed is torn during a tire rotation. Any of those is worth a free diagnosis. We'll tell you exactly what's going on before recommending anything.

Who to Trust for CV Joint Repair in Salt Lake City
Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been working on drivetrains in South Salt Lake since 1990. CV axle and joint work is a regular part of what we do, and we approach it the same way we approach everything: diagnose first, quote before touching anything, and only recommend what the inspection actually shows is needed.
When you bring your vehicle in, you're working with people who've seen every variation of CV joint failure on every make and model. We check the full axle, both joints, both boots, and the opposite side before making any recommendation. You'll know exactly what we found and why we're recommending what we are.
Pinpoint Diagnosis
We identify whether it's the inner or outer joint, which side, and whether the boot is still intact before recommending an axle replacement.
Boot Inspection Included
A torn boot caught early means a boot-only repair instead of a full axle. We check all boots on every CV inspection.
OEM-Quality Axles
We use OEM-specification CV axles and joints, not cheap offshore units that wear out faster and develop grease leaks prematurely.
Same-Day on Most Vehicles
Most CV joint and axle repairs are completed the same day you bring the vehicle in.

A clicking or popping noise during turns is the classic sign of a worn outer CV joint.
See symptom details →Vibration When Accelerating
A damaged CV joint can cause vibration that builds with speed.
See symptom details →Grease on Inner Wheel
A torn CV boot leaks grease, which you may notice as a dark residue on the inside of your wheel or tire.
Clunking Sound
A clunk when shifting from drive to reverse can indicate worn CV joints or axle play.
Frequently Asked Questions — CV Joint & Axle Repair
What causes CV joint failure?
Most commonly, the CV boot tears and lets grease out and road grit in, causing the joint to wear out. Regular inspections catch torn boots before the joint is damaged.
Can I drive with a bad CV joint?
A worn CV joint can fail completely, leaving you stranded. It's best to get it repaired promptly once you notice clicking or vibration.
How long does CV joint repair take?
Most CV axle repairs are completed in 1–3 hours depending on the vehicle.
Should I get a rebuilt axle or a CV joint kit?
It depends on how far the damage has progressed. If the boot is torn but the joint is still serviceable, a boot kit works. If the joint has worn from running without grease, a full axle replacement is the reliable option. We inspect and tell you which applies before recommending anything.
Do you check the opposite axle at the same time?
Yes. Both axles are the same age and see the same road conditions. If one boot is torn or one joint is worn, we inspect the other side closely. Catching a developing problem on the opposite axle prevents a second repair visit a few months later.
What about the axle seal at the transmission?
We check it whenever an axle is out. A seeping axle seal lets transmission fluid contaminate the CV grease and shorten the new axle's life. If it needs replacement, we quote it alongside the axle job since the labor is already there.
Is there a warranty on the repair?
Yes. Every repair we perform is backed by a 2-year parts and labor warranty. If something we fixed gives you trouble within two years, bring it back and we make it right at no charge.
How does your pricing compare to dealers and chain shops?
Our labor rates and parts pricing are consistently below dealer rates — typically 20–40% less for the same repair. We use quality parts and back every job with a 2-year parts and labor warranty. You get a written estimate before any work starts so there are no surprises.
