Grinding Noise When Braking — Repair in Salt Lake City, UT
Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair treats grinding brakes as a same-day repair — we've been fixing them for Salt Lake City drivers since 1990.
What Is Grinding Brakes?
Metal-on-metal grinding when braking means the pads have worn through and the steel backing plate is cutting directly into the rotor surface with every stop. A stuck caliper can produce the same grinding even on a pad with material left, by keeping one pad continuously pressed against the rotor.
Are My Brakes Grinding?
You'll hear a harsh metal-on-metal grinding sound when you apply the brakes — unlike squeaking, this is a low, scraping noise and often comes with vibration felt through the pedal. It means the brake pad material is gone and metal is contacting the rotor.
If you also feel the car pulling to one side when braking, or the pedal pulsing underfoot, the rotor is already damaged. Grinding that only happens on one wheel is often a stuck caliper rather than simply worn pads.
Why Is My Grinding Brakes?
These are the most common causes. The "How to tell" note on each card describes what that cause typically feels or sounds like so you can narrow down which one applies to your vehicle.
Completely Worn Pads
Once the friction material is fully consumed, the steel backing plate of the pad contacts the rotor directly. That backing plate is harder than the cast-iron rotor surface, so each stop scores the rotor like a lathe tool. Stopping power drops because steel has far less braking friction than the friction material it replaced.
Loud, harsh metal-on-metal grinding during every brake application. Often follows weeks or months of squealing that was ignored. Stopping power is noticeably reduced. Inspect the pad through the wheel; if you see metal touching metal, this is the cause.
Stuck Caliper
Calipers float on lubricated slide pins or use sealed pistons that retract slightly when you release the brake. If a slide pin seizes from corrosion or a piston seal swells with moisture, the caliper can't release fully. One pad stays pressed against the rotor while you drive, generating heat and grinding even on pads with plenty of life left.
Grinding can occur even on pads with material remaining. The wheel hub on the affected side is significantly hotter than the other after driving. The vehicle may pull to that side under braking. One side wears 3 to 4 times faster than the other.
Rotor Damage
If new pads are installed on rotors that were already deeply grooved from previous metal-on-metal contact, the new pads can't seat against a smooth surface. The pads ride over the high spots in the existing grooves and produce a grinding sensation under the pedal even though the friction material is fresh.
Grinding sound that started after a recent pad replacement, indicating new pads were installed on damaged rotors. Often paired with vibration through the pedal. Visible deep grooves on the rotor surface viewable through the wheel.

When Should You Bring Your Vehicle In for Grinding Brake Repair?
Get it in same-day. The steel backing plate is harder than the cast-iron rotor — each stop scores the surface like a lathe tool. A rotor that would have been resurfaceable becomes scrap after a few hundred miles of metal-on-metal driving.
Driving through grinding for weeks means pads, rotors, and sometimes calipers, plus possible damage to wheel speed sensors. Utah's canyon descents — Parley's, Big Cottonwood — add heat that accelerates rotor damage further.
Who to Trust for Grinding Brake Repair in Salt Lake City
We measure pad thickness, rotor thickness against minimum spec, runout, and the depth of any scoring. We also check caliper slide pin and piston seal condition — a stuck caliper produces grinding even on pads with material left. Hub temperature after a road test tells us which side is dragging. See our brake service page for what's covered.

Frequently Asked Questions — Grinding Noise When Braking
How much does grinding brake repair cost?
When pads and rotors both need replacement (which is common with grinding), expect $300–$700 per axle. If a caliper has seized and needs replacement, add $200–$400. Catching it at the squeak stage before rotors are scored is always cheaper. Diagnosis is free.
Will I always need new rotors if my brakes are grinding?
Often, yes, but not always. If the grinding has only happened for a short time and the grooves haven't cut deep, rotors can sometimes be resurfaced. After weeks of metal-on-metal contact, the rotor surface is usually too damaged or too thin to save. We measure thickness and groove depth before making the call.
Can I cause damage by driving with grinding brakes for one more day?
Yes, in two ways. Each stop scores the rotor deeper and reduces the chance of saving it. The reduced friction surface also extends stopping distance, so any emergency stop in that window has a measurably worse outcome. Same-day repair is the right answer.
How do I know if the caliper is the problem instead of the pads?
A stuck caliper produces grinding even when the pads have material left. The wheel hub on the affected side runs significantly hotter than the other after driving, the pads on that side wear unevenly front-to-back, and the vehicle pulls toward the dragging side under braking. We check hub temperatures after a road test.

What Our Customers Say

“Was on my way across the country and they took me in on short notice, diagnosed and fixed my issue in a few hours. Good price too.”
“When my previous mechanic told me my car could not be fixed I was desperate and about to get rid of it. But before I gave up I wanted to try one last mechanic. Then I found Scott — brought the car to him and he fixed it quickly like nothing. I couldn't believe it, my car was just running fine. Scott is a genius, he resurrected my dead car!”
“Scott has always preferred good work on my vehicles. I had his shop replace the driveline on my 2014 VW Touareg — not an easy job. The cost was cheaper than another shop. They did a great job. I had them rebuild the alternator because it was too cold for me to do it. The cost was better than I thought. I am very pleased with their work. Scott has always given me good solid advice.”
“This was my second time using Scott's. The power steering went out in my truck. Scott got it in that day and had it fixed in a couple of hours. I couldn't recommend this shop more!”
“Great place, affordable, great work and fast.”
“Honest mechanic.”
