What Does Water Pump Replacement Actually Involve?

The two pumps in the photo show one of the more deceptive failure modes: the pump on the left is new, with seven full aluminum fins that push coolant through the system efficiently. The pump on the right still has an intact shaft that spins — but the impeller fins have been almost completely eaten away by corrosion, so it moves almost no coolant. The engine runs hot even though nothing appears seized, which is why overheating doesn't always point to an obvious failure. Most water pumps give some warning before they fail completely, which is the time to act.
Water pump body and shaft seal — the pump turns a vane wheel inside the engine, driven by the timing belt, timing chain, or a separate drive belt. When the shaft seal fails, coolant leaks out through the weep hole near the front of the engine. That drip is a designed warning signal built into the pump.
