What Is Rough Ride Over Bumps?

When every pothole transmits as a sharp jolt instead of a dampened thud, the shock absorbers or struts can no longer cushion the suspension's rebound — the spring's energy transfers straight into the body rather than being absorbed by the damper.

Is My Ride Rough Over Bumps?

The car transmits every road imperfection directly to the seat and steering wheel — bumps feel harsher than they should, and washboard or brick roads feel punishing. The ride quality has noticeably degraded compared to when the car was newer.

A clunking or knocking sound over bumps that you feel through the floorboard points to a broken mount rather than just fluid wear. If the rough ride is paired with increased bounce or body roll, the shock absorbers themselves have failed.

Why Is My Rough Ride Over Bumps?

These are the most common causes. The "How to tell" note on each card describes what that cause typically feels or sounds like so you can narrow down which one applies to your vehicle.

Worn Shock Absorbers

A shock absorber forces hydraulic fluid through small valves to convert suspension motion into heat. As internal seals harden and the valves wear, fluid bypasses without being damped. The spring's energy that should be absorbed by the shock instead transfers straight into the chassis as a sharp jolt with every bump.

How to tell

Sharp jolts from bumps that don't settle smoothly. An oily or wet shock body confirms the internal hydraulic seal is failing. Worse on rough pavement; Utah's post-winter pothole season makes this especially noticeable.

Worn Struts

Struts work the same way shocks do but also carry suspension load and serve as a steering pivot. When the damper inside the strut fails, every bump's energy goes directly into the body. On top of the harshness, the loss of damping affects steering precision and accelerates tire wear because the wheel can't stay planted.

How to tell

Harsh ride combined with the nose pitching forward under braking. Bounce test: push down on a corner and it bounces more than once before settling. On strut vehicles, this affects steering geometry and tire wear over time.

Deteriorated Bushings

Rubber bushings at suspension mounts and control arm pivots act as the first line of defense against harshness. They absorb micro-impacts before the spring or damper sees them. As the rubber ages and cracks, those impacts pass through unfiltered. The shocks may still be healthy, but every road imperfection now arrives with metallic clunks and direct vibration.

How to tell

Clunking or knocking over bumps rather than a harsh ride without sound. The impact is direct and noisy but settles quickly. Visible cracking or splitting of rubber at suspension mounts when inspected on a lift.

When Should You Bring Your Vehicle In for Shock Absorber Replacement?

A bounce test (push down firmly on a corner, release quickly) where the car bounces more than once before settling means the damper is significantly worn. One bounce and settle is healthy.

Oil seeping from the shock body confirms the internal seal is failing even when the bounce test looks marginal. We check both the bounce test and the shock body for seepage so we catch mid-range wear before it becomes a handling problem.

Who to Trust for Shock Absorber Replacement in Salt Lake City

We replace shocks in axle pairs — even if only one has clearly failed, its partner is aging at the same rate and a mismatched pair creates handling asymmetry. Shock replacement is simpler than strut work with no spring compression required, and most jobs are completed the same day.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been doing suspension work in South Salt Lake since 1990. We bounce-test all four corners and check for body seepage so you know exactly which dampers need attention.

Frequently Asked Questions — Rough Ride Over Bumps

How much does shock absorber replacement cost?

Shock replacement typically runs $200–$500 per axle (pair) depending on the vehicle. If mount bushings are also worn, add $100–$200 for bushing replacement. Doing them together in one visit avoids a second labor charge later. Diagnosis is free.

How long do shocks typically last?

Most shocks last 50,000 to 100,000 miles depending on the vehicle and the roads it's driven on. Utah's rough pavement and mountain conditions wear shocks faster than average. Drivers who commute in the Salt Lake valley after a hard winter often see shock symptoms 10,000 to 20,000 miles earlier than the manufacturer's suggested replacement interval.

Should I replace bushings when I replace shocks?

Often, yes. Shock mount bushings and surrounding suspension bushings have aged on the same clock as the shocks. Installing new shocks on tired bushings means the new dampers can't do their full job, and the rough ride only partially improves. We inspect bushings during any shock or strut job and recommend replacement when warranted.

Can I do a quick check at home to evaluate my shocks?

Yes. Push down firmly on each corner of the vehicle and release. A healthy shock allows one bounce-and-settle. Two or more bounces indicates the shock has lost significant damping. Also look for oil residue on the shock body, which means the internal seal has failed. Both are signs the shock is due for replacement.
